Single Axis
A single axis magnet allows a field to be generated on one principal axis, referred to as the “Z” axis as shown above. All AMI coils allow the field to be generated in either polarity along the Z axis. A single axis magnet may be a simple solenoid as shown or a split coil solenoid to allow radial axis. The coil may be arranged vertically or horizontally.
Common Field Strengths
Z Axis Field | 0T≤X≤16T |
Dual Axis
A dual axis magnet allows a field to be generated along two principal axes by powering one or two independent coils simultaneously. By manipulating the two field axes in combinations of polarities and strengths, the field may be rotated in a circle on the ZY or XY plane as shown above. Field strength, field orientations, and the need for radial access will typically determine if an X-Y or Y-Z orientation magnet is needed . A two axis magnet may be used by powering either independent axis to its full rated value individually, or by the simultaneous operation of both axes. The strength of the field vector is limited by the maximum rotatable field rating. The horizontal or vertical bore designation refers to the “Z” axis.
Common Field Strengths
Z Axis Field | 0T≤X≤9T |
Y Axis Field | 0T≤X≤3T |
Maximum Rotatable Field Ratings | 1T, 3T (common ratings) |
Three Axis
A three axis magnet allows a field to be generated along three principal axes by powering up to three independent coils simultaneously. These axes are referred to above as the “Z”, “Y”, and “X” axis. When simultaneously powering axes, the generated field polarity may be rotated to any orientation within a spherical volume. A three axis magnet may be used by powering any single axis independently to its rated field, or by the simultaneous operation of two or three axes. The strength of this field vector is limited by the maximum rotatable field rating. The horizontal or vertical bore designation refers to the “Z” axis.
Common Field Strengths
Z Axis Field | 0T≤X≤9T |
Y Axis Field | 0T≤X≤3T |
X Axis Field | 0T≤X≤1T |
Maximum Rotatable Field Rating | 0T≤X≤1T (common ratings) |
